How It Works
The Torsion springs on a garage door are capacitors. Their sole purpose is to store energy in order to open the door again. When the garage door is down, the spring(s) are loaded with their maximum amount of energy. When you hit the button for the automatic garage door opener, the opener should control the ascent. Once the garage door is up, the spring(s) have expended most of their energy to get it to that point. That means that while the garage door is opening, the garage door opener is actually just controlling the movement of the garage door.
With another touch of a button, to close the door, the garage door opener is “pushing” the door down, and at the same time winding the spring(s) again to get them ready for the next cycle. The opener is working its hardest that last foot off the ground as it is closing. In short, it works harder closing than it does opening the door.
